What Parents Should Know About Tortle (Prevent/Treat Flat Head Syndrome) And A Giveaway

As a mom to two kids, the news about Flat Head Syndrome or FHS is nothing new to me. In fact, it is something that I feel conscious talking about because I myself have that defect, but I want to let it out. Yes, I am not perfect and I have the same problem. Even my little man shares the same issue. I have always been conscious about my flat head (there I said it with a cringe) and when I became a mom, I never want that for my baby. Unfortunately, my son has a slight flat head problem, but I never want to talk about it with him because I don't want him to feel self-conscious like I have and lose self-confidence. Not only having a flat head makes you self-conscious and may lose self- confidence, but FHS can also have an effect on baby's developmental progress. You can read all about that when you visit the Tortle's website.

When I was growing up, I always ask my mom why do I have a flat head. She would always tell me that when I was a baby, I sleep on my back a lot. No matter how much she would try to reposition me, I would always end up sleeping on my back. She tried the best that she could to prevent that, but unfortunately she wasn't successful. I did the same thing with my first born and did what I could to prevent that, but I wasn't successful either. I am always going to feel guilty about that, to be honest with you. When I learned about Tortle a few weeks ago, I wish I had this knit beanie before when I gave birth to my son. I don't have that same issue with my second child, which I am thankful for that.

After you read this article and learn about Flat Head Syndrome and Tortle, there is a giveaway below for two (2) lucky Chetopian Family readers who would love to win their own lightweight knit beanie Tortle. This is to help raise awareness about the issue and how to prevent or treat it.

What Is Tortle?

About Tortle

Founded by Board Certified Pediatrician and Neonatologist Dr. Jane Scott in 2012, Tortle Products, LLC is located in Denver, CO.  Tortle Products manufactures Tortle, an FDA-cleared patented Class 1 medical device.  This stylish knit beanie prevents and treats Flat Head Syndrome (Plagiocephaly and Torticollis), a condition most prevalent in babies 0-6 months of age.  Every baby is at risk for developing Flat Head Syndrome with one out of two babies being diagnosed with the Syndrome.  Tortle works by gently deflecting a baby’s head from side to side while they are lying on their back.   Available in a variety of colors and designs, Tortle has a recommended retail price of $19.99.  For more information visit www.tortle.com.

Tortle is now available at Target.com since December 10, 2013.
Target.com carries three (3) Tortle designs; Blue Elephant, Pink Flowers and Solid White.  The Tortle beanies are available in medium and large sizes at a suggested retail price of $19.99.

“Every baby is at risk of developing Flat Head Syndrome with one out of two babies being diagnosed with the Syndrome,” said Dr. Jane Scott.  “Through Target.com we will have an opportunity to further increase awareness of Flat Head Syndrome and the ease in which it can be prevented or treated.”

The incidence of Plagiocephaly and Torticollis (or Flathead syndrome) has increased to epidemic proportions since 1992 with more than a million babies being diagnosed with the condition each year in the U.S. alone.  This is due to their lack of movement and the amount of time infants spend on their back (the safest place for them to be).  If left untreated, there can be long-standing problems.  Treatment is frequently expensive and can be somewhat uncomfortable for a baby.  Plagiocephaly and Torticollis are almost 100% preventable with repositioning and Tortle makes this safe and easy.  It is recommended that all newborns wear a Tortle for the first 6 months of life to support healthy development.

Dr. Scott, whose specialty is Pediatrics and Neonatology, is recognized as an expert in the areas of Plagiocephaly and Torticollis.  In her nearly 30 years as a practicing physician, Dr. Scott has counseled and educated hundreds of parents to help prevent as well as treat the many problems associated with Flathead Syndrome.  Dr. Jane’s mission is to prevent Flat head Syndrome-an epidemic affecting the babies across the world. 4. That is really helpful but not in my kids case. They never had a flat head. Maybe because I always move them and they slept on my chest for the most part when they were babies.

  12. My first son had "flat head" & did a combo of Physical Therapy & helmet therapy to fix it. 5 yrs later, my 2nd son has it. We just returned from his 1st PT appointment where she recommended the Tortle before we try the helmet. Seems like a great invention & I'm eager to start it.
