Food Trip Friday: Homemade Whole Wheat Pizza

I was craving for some pizza and I know someone is not going to drive to another town just to get a pizza, plus the weather condition is not safe to be on the road. It snowed again the other day and it added another pile to already snowy ground so really, it's better to just stay at home and make something to eat.

Well, since my ever loving and sweet husband bought me a new digital bread maker for Christmas, I put the baby to use and I made my very first homemade whole wheat pizza dough. Since I forgot to grocery shop, I had to make do of what I had on hand and came up with some toppings of my own. I sauteed some onions, garlic, and then browned up some organic hamburger along with some mushrooms as well. While the dough was rising, I went ahead and opened a can of sweet potato and put it in the food processor until it was saucy and creamy and I used that as my pizza sauce along with my Prego spaghetti sauce. I know! I didn't have any tomato sauce available so why not the spaghetti sauce. It's already flavored and delicious. You got to love it!

When the dough was ready, all I had to do was to spread the dough on a slightly greased pan and poked some wholes with a fork, then spread the tomato and sweet potato sauce, added the cheese, hamburger, mushrooms, slices of red onions, lots of pineapple (we love to have tons of pineapple in our pizza), spread another mozzarella cheese and grated Parmesan cheese on top and baked until the cheese was melted. Once it was done, then I topped it off with some fresh spinach and our homemade pizza was done. Yummy! I loved how the dough turned out. I definitely want to make another pizza some time. I should go grocery shopping then!

Bread Maker Pizza Dough
Yield: 1 pizza crust

- 2/3 cup water
- 1 1/4 tsps. regular active dry yeast or
- 1 1/4 tsps. bread machine yeast
- 1 Tbsp. Olive oil or Vegetable oil
- 1 3/4 cups Gold Medal Better for Bread flour
(what I did was I used one cup of Bread flour OR All-purpose flour, then the 3/4 cup was whole wheat flour)
- 1/2 tsp. sugar
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 Tbsp. flax seed (optional)

DIRECTIONS:
1. Place all ingredients in bread pan in the order listed or as you bread maker manufacturer says. Select DOUGH or WHOLE WHEAT DOUGH cycle. Start.

2. While the bread maker is doing its thing, move oven rack to the lowest position. Heat oven to 400 degrees. Grease cookie sheet or pizza sheet. Once the dough is done, pat it into the sheet with floured fingers and form it the way you want. Spread with your favorite toppings.

3. Bake 18 to 20 minutes or until crust is light brown and the cheese has melted.

Note: Along with the whole wheat pizza dough, I added a tablespoon of flax seed into it for more nutrition. I love it!
