From Huge Skirt to Mini-Dress

If you're like me, I love going to rummage sales or thrift stores and look for some things that can be salvaged and turn it into something new and amazing. Now way back home (Philippines) we call it Ukay-ukay (secondhand stuff), where clothes are laid out under this huge tarp and you can find tons of things from shoes, bags, clothes, toys, etc. They're pretty cheap stuff and some of them even have tags and are in good condition. All you need is patience to sort all those mounds of clothes to find that buried treasure, and of course money. Make sure you also know how to negotiate with the vendor to get great deals.

Anyway, the other day my friend and I went to the rummage sale at the church just across her house. They have a 2-day sale and the second day they have this a dollar-a-bag promo just so they can get rid of most stuff that they have. I got quite a few of things and one of them is this huge skirt that doesn't fit me at all. I wasn't going to buy it at first because I didn't know what to do, but something tells me to go ahead and grab it and maybe later on I will figure out what to do with it. I was glad I did because as soon as I got home, I knew right then what to do with it. Since summer is approaching and we are planning to visit a relative in Florida, I decided to turn it into a mini-sundress that I can wear at the beach. Since the skirt was so big, I had to cut it out and adjust the size so it won't look bulky on me, and the length was just perfect so I didn't do anything to it. I tried it on and I put a belt around it to accentuate the smallest part of my body, and this is how it looks! What do you think? It's Sewtastic!

How about you? Have you done some clothes reconstruction today? Let me know!

  3. Hi! love the dress! When I was a kid, I used to sew dresses for my barbie doll. I admire you being creative. I love sewing... but, sad thing is, I'm just too busy ryt now (working mom) to do such things. =(

  4. Hi there! Thank you so much for checking out. I didn't get to sew clothes for my barbie doll before since it was my mom that did all the sewing. I had this favorite doll with all sorts of beautiful clothes and too sad someone stole it and never seen again. :( I just now got back to sewing again now that my little boy is growing up and can play on his own for awhile. Whenever he is sleeping then I go ahead and sew or when my husband is watching him. Life of a mom is a busy one! Take care!
