Food Share: Steamed Puto Cheese (Steamed Filipino Muffin)

There are a lot of my Filipino food that I miss so much and so the other day I searched for a puto cheese recipe something that is quick and still reminds me of home. Although the traditional Filipino Puto Cheese is made out of rice flour, which I don't have, I chose this quick and easy recipe that I found online instead. Of course you can use all-purpose flour as well. This is how it's made.

Steamed Puto Cheese (Steamed Filipino Muffin)

Thanks to my wonderful husband for the digital steamer that he got me for Christmas. I was pregnant with my second one last year when I told him that I want an early Christmas present (it was October when I told him)- a digital steamer, so I can practise making Steamed Buns or siopao. I love this thing! It cooks really fast.

PUTO CHEESE
by: Pinoy Food Recipes

-- 3 cups Bisquick
-- 1 1/2 cups sugar
-- 1 cup fresh milk (I used Evaporated milk instead)
-- 3 eggs
-- 4 Tbsp. butter or margarine
-- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
-- sliced cheese of your choice or cheddar cheese
-- water

PROCEDURE:

1. In a saucepan or microwave, melt the butter.

2. In a big bowl, combine all the ingredients except cheese and water. Mix well either using a ladle by hand or a mixer, but take note do not mix thoroughly or else the batter can be lumpy.

3. Grease puto molds or ramekins for use in a steamer. Pour or fill the mixture in the prepared molds 2/3 of the way up with the batter and top with shredded cheese.

4. Fill the wok or a saucepan that will hold a steamer basket with the a few inches of water. Bring the water to a boil over a medium-high heat. Place the molds into a steamer basket and place over the boiling water and cover.

(Since I got a digital steamer as a Christmas gift, I used that one instead and it was fast cooking. Also, I didn't get to buy puto molds so I used the foil cupcake cup instead and it held its shape okay.)

5. Steam the puto in a steamer for 15 minutes or until it has rose like cake. Continue to cook puto until there is no more batter and the toothpick comes out clean when you poke the cake. Enjoy!

Here is my young man always in the kitchen with me whenever I am baking. He loves to mix, pour and whisk. Maybe he will have his own bakery someday? Thank you my little man.
