Homemade Plum Pop Tarts

One of the fruit trees we have in our yard is this plum tree that has tiny little plums (I forgot the name of it), but it was very disappointing to find out that they don't really taste all that good and they were looking ugly since the worms have invaded the poor plum. In an effort to save the fruits instead of going to waste, I harvested some, cleaned it up, cut up some of those ugly parts of the plums and I made my own plum preserve and that became my homemade plum pop tart filling.

Disappointing the taste was, this little girl still loved eating the plums.

She was helping me pick some plums.

Simple and easy to make.
This is my own way of making it so I don't have any exact measurements. I just eyeballed it. I just added about 1 1/2 cup of sugar (since the plums were not that sweet so it needed some sugar), one tablespoon of lemon zest, and a juice of half a lemon or the whole lemon if it is not juicy. The lemon juice really made it tart. Mix it all up together, then turn the stove on and let it bubble, caramelized and thickened. Once it has thickened and it is coating the back of the spoon, turn the heat off. Get a strainer and strain the seeds off of the preserve and transfer it in a jar and let it cool before covering (all you need to remove are the seeds and the rest of it is good to eat). Once cooled, now you can enjoy your homemade plum preserve spread on top of a pancake or toasted bread. With mine, I used it as my pop tart filling. Here's what I did.

All you need is your puff pastry (photo below) and your preserve. You can also use Nutella or other jellies or jams for this. It's up to you.

Cut your puff pastry into four even squares. On each squares, fill the other side up with your filling, leaving the edges and fold that in half to make it into a triangle. Make sure to brush a little bit of water on the edges to help seal it.

Once you folded that up, using a fork you press the edges to seal it even more and to make it look even prettier. Do that to the rest of your pastries.

Slit an opening on the top of the tarts to let the steam out once it is baking. It will look like the photo above. Brush it with egg wash to glaze it and once you got everything done, follow the instructions that came in the box on how to bake the pastries until it becomes golden brown. Take it out of the oven, let it cool and enjoy!

I was going to make a white glaze for this one, but I thought it would be way too sweet that I left it that way. It still was good and out of eight pop tarts, I only have two tarts left. My boys were really digging it. Hope you'd try this easy-to-make  tarts yourself. Like I said, you can use any filling you want and just follow the baking instructions and enjoy  your homemade treats! Hope this brightens your Monday!

  1. A) Plum tarts sound pretty delicious right now... do you deliver?
    B) Thank you so much for your comment on my Alzheimer's post. My dad has actually been on coconut oil and other supplements for two years. I really believe the coconut oil gave us more time, a very peaceful time too... If it had not been for the time coconut oil gave us, I would have written a post like that way earlier. Sadly, the effect seems not be so strong anymore but we are grateful for what it did do. Thanks for sharing your knowledge though. Maybe I should have mentioned it in my post...

  3. I would definitely make this if I have my own plum tree laying in our backyard but since we don't, I guess I'll just settle for the commercial pop tarts. lol! How's the Puff Pastry? Do you think it can be used for Empanada? Tamad kse gumawa ng dough eh! :) Thanks for sharing your recipe though.

    1. Well, you don't have to use plum for this. You can use any filling you want that's for sure. :) hehehe... The puff pastry is different though than the ones you make for Empanada, but sure you can use it if you like. You can buy already made pizza dough and sometimes it is at the same aisle as the Puff Pastry.
